The ministry

The Ministry of Health, Indigenous medicine, Social welfare, Probation and child care services was established under the authority of the Constitution number 13 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. It consists of three (03) “A” grade departments and over 10000 employees. The ministry provides the service to the people of the central province under different areas until now.

The Central Province

The Province is located in the Central hills of Sri Lanka and consists of the three Districts Kandy, Matale and Nuwaeliya. The Land area of the Province is 5674 square kilometers which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka. The Province lice on 6.60 - 7.70 Northern latitude and between 80.50- 80.90 Eastern latitudes. The elevation in the Province ranges from 600 feet to over 6000 feet above sea level in the central hills. The Province is bordered by the North Central Province from the North the Mahaveli river and Uma Oya from the east to the south from mountain range of Adams peak. Kirigalpoththa and Thotapala and the mountain ranges Dolosbage and Galagedara from the west.

The mean temperature ranges from 160 c-260 c in the Province where lower temperatures are recorded in hills in the Nuwaraeliya District, in the Central Province 52% of the lands has been cultivated while another 6.3% has been identified as lands which can be cultivated, of the lands cultivated more than 35% has been cultivated with tea while 14.8% has been cultivated with paddy. the percentage of lands cultivated whith coconut and rubber is 4.8% and 2.3% respectively.

For the purpose of administration the Central Province has 36 Divisional Secretary areas in the 3 Districts. They are further divided into 2,224 Grama Niladari areas,5,763 village and local government bodies comprising 4 municipality and 6 urban councils areas.

Providing health and indigenous medicine services efficiently in order to ensure healthy life for Medarata community, conservation and strengthening of Sri Lankan indigenous medicinal system, fulfilling the needs of citizens including children, elder citizens, disabled community who are seeking for social security while contributing to uplift their social, economic and living standard.

  • Provision of quality curative health service to the service seekers and deliver preventive health service efficiency.
  • Mediation to conserve and develop traditional and indigenous medicinal system.
  • Provision of relief measures to physically mentally and socially disadvantaged citizens.
  • Facilitation to Protect children’s rights and facilitation to socialize children as disciplined citizens.
